European Security in a Multipolar World – 8 May 2025

On 8 May 2025, the seminar “European Security in the Multipolar World” was held at the Ancient Library of the Link University. The seminar aims to offer a moment of reflection and in-depth analysis on the theme of European defense, analyzing the development prospects from both a political and military point of view. In an increasingly complex and unstable international context, the construction of a real common defense policy represents one of the central challenges for the European Union. Some of the initiatives that have marked the process of European integration in this sector and the ongoing projects and opportunities for cooperation between Member States and the strategic implications for the future of the continent were explored from a historical point of view.

The day opened with the panel “From the WEU to the second pillar: the construction of a Europe of defense” with the speeches of Prof. Maurizio Melani (Link University), Prof. Lorenza Sebesta (University of Buenos Aires), Prof. Giorgio Grimaldi (Link University) and Michele Pigliucci (Link University), moderated by Prof. Tommaso Visone (Link University).

The following panel “Defending Europe: strategic, military and political priorities in which international context?” featured Pietro Serino (former Chief of Staff of the Army), Andrea Gilli (University of St. Andrews), Massimo Candura (former Vice President of the Senate Defense Committee) and Federico Castiglioni (Istituto Affari Internazionali); moderated by Prof. Filippo Maria Giordano (Link University). Fabrizio Guacci and Federico Caiano of the Centro Analisi e Studi Italus served as discussants.
